Bramptonians celebrated the arrival of the torch
Brampton-
Dr.
Ruby Dhalla, Member of Parliament for
Brampton-Springdale joined Bramptonians to
celebrate the Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of
the torch in Brampton.
Today was a historic occasion as Bramptonians gathered
to watch fellow Bramptonian Ryan Bennett carry the
Olympic Torch in Brampton by sledge hockey sled — a
first in Olympic Torch Relay History.
“It is an honour to have Brampton-Springdale on the
torch relay route. It was a proud moment to watch Ryan
Bennett who has overcome so much adversity, to carry the
torch in the relay. There was a feeling of immense
Canadian pride as Bramptonians came out with their
families to celebrate the arrival of the torch in
Brampton, ” said Dhalla.
A native of Brampton, Ryan Bennett was born with
cerebral palsy which has left him with only partial use
of his legs. However this hasn’t stopped Ryan from
dedicating himself to the sport of sledge hockey, in
which Ryan is currently a member of the Halton-Peel
Cruisers which recently won the 2009 Cruisers Cup
Tournament.
The Olympic Torch Relay continues its travels across the
country over the next coming weeks until it reaches its
final designation at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver
on February 12 2009.
Dhalla joins the Brampton community in thanking the
athletes for making Canada proud and wishing them the
best of luck in the upcoming Winter Games.
