Organized Spousal Night Dinner at Bay view Golf
and County Club

Friday, December 11th, Canada- Pakistan
Business Council organized a Holiday, Festival
Spousal Night Dinner at the Bayview Golf and County
Club. The program was attended by over 250 guests
including the Guest Speaker, Mr. Alfred Apps,
President of Empire Club, the oldest and most
prestigious Club of Canada where such dignitaries
like former British Prime Ministers, Winston
Churchill and Margaret Thatcher have spoken. Other
distinguished guests included the Consul General Of
Pakistan, Mr. Sahebzada A. Khan, Hon. Harinder
Takhar, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Hon. Bryon
Wilfert , MP Richmond Hill, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, MP
Scarborough/Agincourt, Yasmin Ratansi, MP East Don
valley Parkway, Hon. Sinclair Stevens, Hon. Roy
MacLaren, Mr. Rafiq Bengali, CEO Americas of
National Bank of Pakistan, other leading bankers,
businessmen, community leaders and professionals.

speaker, Mr. Alfred APPS recieving memento from Hon.

The event
started with the National Anthems of Canada and
Pakistan, followed by the welcome address from the
president of CPBC Andy Merchant. He talked about the
evening’s formal signing of the MOU with TISA (Trade
Investment and Service Alliance) to further the
networking of its members and to promote the trade
with Pakistan, as well as nationally and
internationally. He spoke about the previous
agreements signed with CME, CATA, RCA, ICC and FPCCI
all of which have helped the bilateral trade and
have seen a significant growth in the bilateral
trade. He talked about the presence of such large
Canadian companies in Pakistan such as SNC Lavalin,
Barrick Gold and RIM and encouraged others to look
beyond the southern borders.
Mr. David
Gedart, President of TISA spoke about the
opportunities he sees for his members to expand
their business in Pakistan through the strong
connections of CPBC and offered an opportunity for
CPBC members to do business in South America and
Africa where its members have strong connections.
The Emcee,
Azmina Kazi then asked the two presidents to join
for the MOU Signing Ceremony which was witnessed by
Minister Harinder Takhar, Consul General and Trade
Commissioner of DFAIT Alan Ballak. Following this
Javed Mughal made a brief presentation on the new
technology and where he feels the world is heading
in this field. A new Website for CPBC has been
recently developed for which Mr. Shakeel Mirza of
SmartTech and Mr.Ali Rana of Solsnet, were
recognized for their roles in its development and
were presented with plaques.
Mr. Alfred
Apps then gave his key-note address and talked about
his role as a young man working with the former
Prime Minister Trudeau and how his vision changed
the Canadian immigration policy. He also praised Mr.
Trudeau for his role in the Charter of Rights and in
bringing the Constitution to Canada. He said that
the immigrants with all their contacts in their
motherland can be the bridge and play a vital role
in the enhancement of the Canadian economy. Mr.Apps
was presented with a memento by Hon. Bryon Wilfert.
Before the announcement of dinner, a short
presentation was made about the upcoming Pakistan
Cricket Eleven vs. the World Eleven at the Rogers
Center which will take place in February 2010.
After a sumptuous dinner, the audience was
entertained by Nuroop Dance Creations.
